was it the hamburglar?

Posted by bryanz on Tue Sep 22 2009 23:33 (Link)
we got home tonight and noticed our house was burgled this afternoon. we had the cops here dusting for fingerprints and everything. the cops said ours wasn't a typical case because we were able to get such good pictures of the intruders. no one's laughing at my nerdy IP security cameras now. ;) this finger print dust is impossible to clean up. good thing i don't own any white clothing.

well the bird, the bird, b-bird's the word

so i'm minding my own business yesterday and this pigeon shows up on my doorstep. i give him the eye, and go back inside. i go back out later in the day and he's still there. same story this morning. i noticed a band on his leg, picked him up, and wrote down the numbers. a bit of googling shows that he's a racing pigeon, released in nevada and racing back home to san francisco. guess he got lost or fed up with the (winged) rat race. i found out that racing pigeons don't eat bread like street pigeons, they prefer rice. i got some rice and water, picked up the pigeon, and put him in my bathroom while i emailed the club he's a member of. they got back to me and are trying to get a hold of the owner, who will hopefully come and pick him up soon. i had no idea pigeon racing even existed. apparently it's been going on since 220AD.

i think i'll name him leeroy.

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros

Posted by bryanz on Wed Sep 16 2009 00:44 (Link)
i just had my cerebellum blown and my soul transfixed by the powers of edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros. imagine the variety of characters and energy of the muppets, added to the excessive number of band members, freewheeling indie rock, ludicrous energy of the arcade fire, playing songs that have a taste of the 60s, headed by a front man who looks like a hare krishna. their cd is good but really doesn't come close to seeing them live.

learning is fun

researching physical security and the evolution of the technology behind it is interesting stuff. but remember that just because your IP capable physical security solutions are behind a firewall doesn't mean they're protected from hackers.

pigeon faster than dsl

Posted by bryanz on Thu Sep 10 2009 16:33 (Link)
not quite IP over carrier pigeon (rfc 1149), but it's a lot faster than IP over copper in some places.

nerd alert

Posted by bryanz on Sun Sep 06 2009 15:36 (Link)
today i've been torn between being productive and enjoying the three day weekend. the german in me wants to get something done, and the italian in me wants to lie in the sun. compromise: writing a presentation on joomla security while drinking my homemade limoncello on the patio.
