SWPL revisit

Posted by bryanz on Fri Jan 30 2009 19:12 (Link)
yesterday i posted about cnn's interview with the guy who wrote Stuff White People Like. i just remembered i really liked his comment about the modern day equivalent of yuppies.

"It's an update on this idea of a yuppie. In the '80s, the idea of the yuppie was really about just consumerism: I have an expensive BMW, I have these things, and it's buying, buying, buying. I think that that attitude is still there, but the materials changed into where it's "My carbon footprint's lower, my music taste is better, I visited more countries than you." The quest for status is still there."

i also liked his comment on the left wing in general.
"I consider myself a self-aware, left-wing person who's not afraid to recognize the selfishness and contradictions that come on the left. I think a lot of people who are on that side really fail to do that a lot of the time. I think the people I write about here are very, very self-righteous and believe that everything they do is right, and they are very resistant to cast a critical eye to themselves. It was really fun for me to write in a cathartic way, sort of like I am attacking my own pretentiousness and my own ridiculousness. It's just amazing because these people are so self-aware but so unaware at the same time."

in the spirit of full disclosure, i'm a moderate-leftie.

boxee vs mythtv vs xbmc + mediastream

Posted by bryanz on Thu Jan 29 2009 22:15 (Link)
why do i like xbmc with mediastream better than boxee and mythtv?

mythtv pro: it's crazy-flexible and is the only one of the three that can record cable tv.
mythtv con: it's complicated, isn't anything special to look at, and i don't need to record cable tv.

xbmc pro: with the mediastream skin it's simple, easy to use, and sexy as all get out.
xbmc con: doesn't play online media like hulu, so on the rare occasions i want to watch a show only found on hulu i have to watch it on my laptop.

boxee pro: plays all sorts of online media like hulu, netflix, abc, etc.
boxee con: plays all sorts of online media like hulu, netflix, abc, etc.
the reason i got rid of cable was so i wouldn't be tempted to watch excessive amounts of tv. my willpower is weak, and the flashing lights and infomercials hypnotize me. with the new spare time on my hands i've gotten in the habit of reading, hacking, and doing my coloring books. boxee makes the the sweet, innocent internet and my tv into a seething, fetid cesspool of cable tv substitute. i also don't like the interface, it's too complicated for my simple brain. and as much as i love my friends, i don't need to know about every video they watch. i only care if they've found something really good, and if that's the case they tell me in person. you know, like when people used to socialize face to face in olden times. the whole social aspect of boxee, the very fiber of its being, just doesn't interest me. it's nothing against boxee and the talented people who wrote it, it's a great piece of software that's going to be around a long time and will help change how mainstream society gets its media. i'm just a simple old hermit who doesn't want to be distracted from his columbo reruns.

PS: my opinion could change depending on how boxee progresses.

zombie road signs

Posted by bryanz on Thu Jan 29 2009 09:00 (Link)
someone "hacked" one of those led traffic message signs to say "zombies ahead", which i thought was funny even if it is a misdemeanor. i think it's funnier that the department of transportation is going to talk to the manufacturer about higher security for the control boxes when the workers probably used a default password, and even if they didn't the password can be reset with two key presses and a burned-in default password. they need them to be easily resettable in case the workers forget the password, but they could have the manufacturer re-flash the hardware to change the reset password to something specific to each customer, which only the supervisor has access to.

obama in the house

at least when obama gets nervous when giving speeches he pauses and still gets the words right, rather than making up his own imaginary words like bush.
