google maps street view expansion

Posted by bryanz on Wed May 21 2008 22:44 (Link)
looks like the kids at google maps have been driving a lot recently in their little camera car. check out the expanded coverage in blue, then zoom out to see the rest of the country. they even have some in alaska! do you think they pay contractors to do drive around, or do some lucky/unlucky interns get to do it?

finally using flickr, clarification on last post

Posted by bryanz on Sun May 04 2008 16:21 (Link)
i finally put some stuff in my flickr account. i'll still keep all my pictures on my server, but will use flickr to host the ones i think are more purty.

for those who have tried to convince me of the error of my ways in my last post (there were several of you), see the clarification i added. i was trying to say that i hate podcasts that cover data-heavy technical topics, when they would be much more effective in a written form. i know i said i hate all podcasts in the first sentence, but that was just to stir the pot and make me seem like even more of a curmudgeon than i already am. besides, this is the internet. who checks facts and logical fallacies these days? i could write a post about mother teresa's roller derby days if i wanted to. ahh freedom.
the internet: more american than hot apple pie and baseball.

see you in hell, podcasts.

Posted by bryanz on Fri May 02 2008 13:29 (Link)
i hate podcasts. they're the worst thing to come out of the internet, except for geocities web pages with flashing yellow text on a white background.
"but why?" asks the innocent netizen, clutching his (or her) favorite podcast close to their chest like a wounded kitten. i'll tell you why. i'm not going to waste half an hour or more listening to a podcast, putting up with some yokel interjecting allegedly witty banter to get to the meat of the episode. even assuming the hosts were cut and dry like newscasters i would still need to listen in real time to get the content out of the podcast. and don't come at me with your new-fangled fast-foward and such, there aren't any markers of significant topics to automatically fast-forward to. i'm basically listening to a reel-to-reel when i could just read the newspaper, skimming topics and lines as i desire. boo audio. huzzah text.
now where's my slate and chalk?

update (5/3/08 11:05pm): i was thinking that the only type of podcasts that redeems themselves are ones like npr's all songs considered. it's a podcast that lets you listen to new, relatively undiscovered music. good concept, good medium, good delivery. i still don't recommend listening to podcasts to get any sort of hard facts or large amounts of data.
