nerd talk

Posted by bryanz on Fri Nov 10 2006 16:08 (Link)
i'm setting up a new network and servers at home and i'm trying to decide how to lay them out. i have a via mini-itx board with three 500gb drives in it as my main file server, but i need a power supply for it. all of the mini-itx power supplies i've found can't handle the 150 watt surge when the drives spin up, so i'm trying to find a small 1u atx power supply out of a rackmout system.

i have a soekris net4501 with 3 100bt interfaces and 1 802.11b interface that i got a sweet deal on at defcon. i want to use that as my firewall and vpn box but the cpu limits throughput to about 17mb/s, less than the 25mb/s average of our 802.11g network. since i have the mini-itx box running the file server as a vmware guest for extra security (yeah yeah, i know i'm paranoid) maybe i could just run a firewall/vpn in another guest. it's not ideal from a security perspective but i don't feel like blowing $250-$350 on a faster soekris board or another mini-itx box with a case and power supply. i'm also trying to keep the power draw down so i don't have huge electric bills.

as for other security stuff, a honeypot and ids would be nice. since we're using 802.11g and i don't want to slow it down with the 802.11b card on the soekris box, maybe i can use the 802.11b inteface as a wireless honeypot. i could also port forward some services from the border router and have both of those dump into a vmware guest. if i wanted to foward an entire ip worth of ports i could set up some iptables rules and an ipsec tunnel on my box at the data center and have a public ip over there route to a private ip at home. oh decisions decisions, what's a security nerd to do?

score one for me being a dork

Posted by bryanz on Sun Nov 05 2006 20:39 (Link)
so a couple of years ago at defcon i bought a license plate frame that said "i'd rather be hacking". as i was driving around the costco parking lot the other day i noticed a lady in a mercedes following me up and down several aisles. i parked in one of the costco-sized spaces and saw her get out of her car right behind me. fearing a mugging or abduction might ruin an otherwise fine november morning, i prepared an escape plan. would it be the tried and true shriek and run, or slink under the car as my cat taught me? of course it was nothing that exciting, this is *my* boring life we're talking about here. the lady came up to me and said "so if you'd really rather be hacking, send me your resume. we're a startup looking to hire good people." not quite the made-for-tv drama i had hoped for, but entertaining none the less.

weekend in reno, followed by congestion on the couch

Posted by bryanz on Wed Nov 01 2006 13:16 (Link)
i went to reno for katie's grandma's 80th birthday, and a good time was had by all. i danced with one of the robert palmer girls and had my ass bitten by katie's aunt. i also got a cold which turned my halloween night into a night of sitting on the couch watching family guy episodes with all the lights off so trick or treaters wouldn't come to the house. i got a glimpse of my future as a hermit and it wasn't as glamorous as i had hoped. i think it's because i was missing some key ingredients, namely: a rocking chair, a shotgun, and a healthy fear of "old man zimmer" burned into the minds of every neighborhood child.
